S.L. "Matt" Matheney, 78, of Alamogordo, passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, in Las Cruces.
Matt was born Jan. 18, 1929, in Monterey, Tenn., to Arbrey Chester and Kate (Smith) Matheney. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1948 and retired as a technical sergeant in 1969 after tours in Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Newfoundland, Hawaii and Alaska.
After his military retirement, he worked for Standard Transmission Petroleum from 1969 to 1975. He then became a deputy sheriff for Otero County and was elected sheriff in 1986, for which he served from 1987 to 1989. Matt was a member of the Boles Acres Baptist Church, Tularosa Lodge No. 49, A.F. & A.M., the Scottish Rite Bodies in Las Cruces; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years Ann Matheney, of the family home; a son, Randy Matheney, of Alamogordo; two daughters, Myra Kane, of Clovis, and Lea Ann Hathorn, of Roswell; four grandchildren, Matthew Kane, of Tucson, Ariz., Kara Matheney, of College Station, Texas, Justin Work, of Roswell, and Brett Matheney, of Portales; a sister-in-law, Mary Jo Matheney, of Monterey, Tenn.; and two nephews, Mitchell and Sonny Matheney, of Monterey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers James and Charles Matheney.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Hamilton-O'Dell Chapel with the Rev. James Forney officiating.
Committal services will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery with Tularosa Lodge No. 49, A.F. & A.M. officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Holloman Air Force Base Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be Brett Matheney, Justin Work, Matthew Kane, Norvester Blake and Joey Whitted.
Friends may call this evening from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
