Stephen Andrew Papson Obituary

Stephen Papson, 69, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He was born on August 4, 1946, in New York, New York.

Survivors include his wife, soul mate, and BFF of 47 years Patricia Papson; sons, Stephen Papson, III of Denver, Colo., Christopher, wife (Dr. Rowena) Papson of Naval Air Station Sigonella, Keith, wife (Lindsy Roberts) Papson of Las Vegas, Nev.; three beautiful granddaughters, Madeline Papson, Gracie Papson, Brielle Papson; and one handsome grandson, Christopher Papson, II; sister, Peggy Wiggins of Tucson, Ariz.; two sister-in-laws, Theresa Dominiak of Islip, Long Island, N.Y., Kristina Dreiske of Grayslake, Ill.; two nephews, Michael Dominiak of Islip, Long Island, N.Y., Charles (Helen) Dreiske of Chicago, Ill.; niece, Chloe Dreiske of Chicago, Ill; cousins, Jerry and Cathy Papson of Selden, Long Island, N.Y.; Tony and Joanie Scardino of Ronkonkoma, Long Island, N.Y., and many other family members, and many many friends.

Steve joined the United States Navy in 1964, then worked for Grumman Aerospace, Calverton, Long Island which brought him to Alamogordo, on a Navy-Air Force contract. Alamogordo was such a lovely town, weather great, nice people, the Papson family packed up everything in New York and took a chance in New Mexico, 34 years later and it's still a lovely town, great weather and wonderful people.

Steve was a quiet man, who loved his family more than anyone could know. A little more than two years ago he was diagnosed with small cell cancer, he "kicked" its butt every time it came back. No matter what the cancer threw at him, or the treatment needed, he faced it with strength, grace, and dignity. Always staying positive, refusing to let it get him down. He inspired others around him to stay strong, and keep living, no matter what. In October, another round of cancer reared its ugly head, except now in the pancreas. But once again he worked hard to kick its butt. Steve did not lose his battle to cancer, he won, and lived.

He chose the time he wanted to go to Heaven, and be an angel to watch over us. A sweet kiss goodbye, and he passed as beautifully as he lived. He will be missed by all that loved him, knew him, and all those whose paths he crossed will forever be Blessed.

We would like to Thank all those at Champion Cancer Center, it always amazed Steve and I, how they made this "tough" time not just bearable, but pleasant, and comforting: Dr. Korec, and Dr. Rolen, who helped us make life changing decisions always giving us all sides of the story: Alamogordo Hospice, but especially Angie Walsh; all the super nice nurses, CNA's and staffing at Gerald Champion Hospital who were there for his very short respite stay.
My wonderful office staff, in both Alamogordo, Anita, Office Manager and Ruidoso, Ashley, Office Manager who took care of our clients, and allowed me to spend this special time with my husband and family. Carolyn and staff at Cottonwood Pet Resort who took great care of our pets when necessary. Our wonderful friends, Debbie and Eric Heckman, Teri and Ross Cox, John and Maryann Miller, Pete and Angie Nissley, Mary Pieper and all of those at Casa Y Tierra, and the many others whose prayers, caring and concerns have helped us through this time. Thank you...

As my wonderful husband always used to say "so.. are we having fun yet"?.. .. I love you Steve, until we meet again...
