Thomas John Soffera, 62, of Alamogordo, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, after a five-year struggle with colon cancer. Tommy was at home surrounded by his wife and sons, his parents, and brother and sister.
Tommy was born on Jan. 18, 1947, in Phoenix, the son of Thomas and Dolores Soffera. He was the oldest of three siblings. He attended school in Phoenix and graduated from Maryvale High School in 1965. Tommy enlisted in the Air Force soon after high school, and served in Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines during the Vietnam War. While in the military, Tommy attended college and began his career in jet engine maintenance management, which he continued until he retired from the military on June 30, 1987. After military retirement, Tommy worked for Lockheed Martin, Dyncorp and M-1 Support Services Lear Siegler until October 2009, a total of 22 years of service.
On June 27, 1970, he married Eileen Phyllis Page. During their marriage, Eileen and Tommy lived in Tucson, Ariz.; Ewa Beach, Hawaii; Alamogordo; Las Vegas, Nev.; Clovis; Colorado Springs, Colo., and after Tommy's retirement from the Air Force, they made their long-term home back in Alamogordo.
Tommy volunteered extensively in his church throughout his life. He served as a deacon of Cottonwood Christian Fellowship. Tommy and Eileen were mentors for Marriage Savers, a program designed to provide premarital counseling for young couples.
Tommy enjoyed fishing and hunting, target shooting, working on his cars or truck, and racing cars at Sertoma Speedway, among many other endeavors.
The love of his life, other than the Lord and worshiping him, was spending time with his wife, sons and grandchildren, and extended family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen; son Michael and daughter-in-law Deborah, of Las Cruces; son Troy and daughter-in-law Monica, of Killeen, Texas; son Jeremy and daughter-in-law Lorene, of Hollywood, Fla.; grandchildren Kai, Haleigh, Shyla and Riley; parents Thomas and Dolores, of Payson, Ariz.; brother and sister-in-law Greg and Marlene, of Hesperia, Calif.; and sister and brother-in-law Cheryl and John Kreger, of Waddell, Ariz.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Alamogordo Funeral Home, 2301 First St., Alamogordo.
In lieu of flowers, the Tommy Soffera Memorial Fund has been established at Loco Credit Union, P.O. Box 1743, Alamogordo, NM 88310. Donated funds will be distributed to the Alamogordo Hospice, Cancer Services of New Mexico for cancer victim family retreats, the Gideons and Cottonwood Christian Fellowship Missions.
