Base education and training team leader
Velmo Lee Holm, 59, of Alamogordo, passed away Monday, March 31, 2008.
Velmo was born Jan. 3, 1949, in Omaha, Neb., to Velmo Leo and Frances Irene (Antrim) Holm. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska and did post-graduate studies at Dakota State in Madison, N.D.
Velmo was very much loved by his family. His wife, son, daughters, grandchildren and many friends will miss him dearly. He was a civil service employee, having lived in Germany, Japan, Alaska and Bahrain. He loved traveling and sharing his work experiences, and always looked forward to new opportunities. His last assignment brought him here in 1999 as a newlywed working at Holloman Air Force Base as the base education and training team leader.
Some of his great joys were spending time with his family; trips to baseball games and football bowl games; vacationing at Disney World, Canada, Washington, D.C., Florida, Oregon, California, New York City and Washington state, and taking cruises. He loved his yearly road trip with his son Peter, and lived life in all its grandeur. Birthdays, Christmases, anniversaries; he was always ready to celebrate life to its fullest.
Velmo was an avid Cornhusker fan, loved sweepstakes, jazz, bowling, collecting trains, volunteering at the Toy Train Depot, movies and dining out. He had a deep love for Grace United Methodist Church and the people he served at work.
The world has been made better because of Velmo.
Survivors include his wife Joann, of the family home; his son Peter Hans Holm, of Florence, Ore.; two daughters, Patricia Rooney, of Alamogordo, and Jeanne Cassidy, of Seattle; two grandchildren, Brayden and Katelyn Rooney, of Alamogordo; two brothers, Bill Holm and his wife Patti, of Arroyo Grande, Calif., and Jay Holm and his wife Shirley, of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and a sister, Karen Dillingham and her husband John, of Indian Wells, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 16th Street and Cuba Avenue, with the Rev. Dr. Steve Trout officiating.
Committal services will follow at the St. Jude Columbarium, with Father Bryant Hausfeld, O.F.M., and the Rev. Dr. Steve Trout officiating.
Cremation and services are under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Men at Grace United Methodist Church, 1206 Greenwood Lane, Alamogordo, NM 88310.
