Verla B. Gaston McBroom, 91
Verla B. Gaston McBroom was a good Christian woman who departed this life to join her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Feb. 25, 2011. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Enid, Okla., but attended Bethel Baptist Church in Alamogordo.
Verla was born on March 31,1919, in rural Woodward county Oklahoma, the seventh child and daughter of Ralph and Ina Gaston, Oklahoma pioneers. She grew up and was educated in Woodward, Oklahoma City, Muskogee and Enid, Okla. On Nov. 28,1942 she married handsome Staff Sergeant Robert F. McBroom Jr. of the U.S. Army Air Corps. After World War II, they lived in various places in Oklahoma and Texas and had two daughters. In 1954, she went to work as a secretary at Oakwood Country Club in Enid and advanced through the years retiring finally in 1974 as office manager.
She was a world traveler, visiting Norway, Bolivia, Argentina and China. She was very active in her church including Women's Missionary Union, Sunday School and serving on various service committees. She was also an active member of the American Business Women's Association. She maintained her own household until 2004, when she joined her eldest daughter and husband in Alamogordo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers and a sister; her husband of 25 years, Robert F. McBroom; and her grandson, Jonathan Loren Plummer.
She is survived by her daughter, Connie Plummer and husband Vernon Plummer of the home and her daughter Cheryl McBroom, of Ramstein, Germany; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren including granddaughter Rachel Reynolds of Denver, Colo., grandson Jeff Plummer, his wife Amy, and their daughters Kathryn and Alexandra of Houston, Texas, granddaughter Cary Curtis, her husband Steven, son Gabriel and daughters Olivia and Sydney of Tulsa, Okla.
Graveside services will be in at Memorial Park Cemetery in Enid, Okla.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 2 at 11 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church.
The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
The McBroom family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
