Veronica Ann "Barkie" Horton

1940 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Veronica Ann "Barkie" Horton Obituary

God called one of his angels home; a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Veronica passed from this life on July 29, 2016. She was known as "Barkie" to all those who knew her. She was born in Albuquerque, N.M., and was the youngest of five children.

Her family moved to Cloudcroft, N.M., in 1950 and then to Sacramento Peak, N.M., in 1953. She grew up in the Quonset Huts at Sac Peak and rode the school bus to Cloudcroft every day. She attended school in Cloudcroft until she graduated. She married her high school sweetheart, Melvin Horton, on July 18, 1958; they just recently celebrated their 58th anniversary together. Melvin and Barkie moved to Tularosa, N.M., in 1963 where they raised their family and became friends with the community. They lived in Tularosa until they moved to Alamogordo in 2006.

Barkie was a homemaker and crafter. She worked side by side with her husband at their local plumbing business. When she wasn't spending time with her family, she enjoyed painting ceramics and cement yard items, and selling them at different craft shows with her husband. She never met a stranger and loved visiting with friends and neighbors. She was proud of her Cherokee Heritage where she is listed on the Dawes Roles in Oklahoma. She loved camping out and traveling in their motor home visiting her roots all over the Cherokee Nation.

Barkle is survived by her loving husband, Melvin Horton; daughter, Rhonda Baldonado (Horton) and husband, John Baldonado; son, Kevin Horton; granddaughter, Autumn Day Baldonado and her fiancé, Jackson Hobson; grandson, Skyler Horton; and sisters, Bennie Patterson and Susie Vann.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gladys and Dean T. Day, and brothers, Dean A. Day and Jim Day.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at 2:00 p.m., at the Hamilton O-Dell Funeral home with a reception held at the Desert Palms Trailer Court Recreation Center immediately after.

No more suffering, no more pain. She is able to drink all the Diet Coke and eat all the Green Chile Cheeseburgers she wants again. She is now able to fly with the angels.

The Horton family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the arrangements.
