Vester "Doc" Bennett

1927 - 2007 Obituary Condolences
Vester "Doc" Bennett, 80, of Alamogordo, went home to be with the Lord Jesus on Thanksgiving, Nov. 22, 2007.
Doc was born in Hugo, Okla., July 5, 1927, to Andrew and Maggie Bennett. Doc lived most of his life in El Paso, Texas, working his cranes and building a town that was booming at the time. Doc and his wife of 56 years, Winnie, moved to Bent in September 1857. Their children grew up in the mountains, learning to respect and love the outdoors. Steve Bennett and his wife Laurie have two children, Bryan and Sara. Bridgette Rardin (Bennett) and her husband Ronny have three children: Laura, Dustin and Bailey. Mark Bennett and his wife Carm have two children, Jennifer and Marty. Doc has five great-grandchildren, who all live in the area.
Doc served his country in World War II from 1945 to 1947 and was very proud to be a veteran. In 1951, he met his wife, Winnie Herrin. Doc loved animals and a lot of people knew him as the "bird man" because he would get all the old donuts in town, take them and water out and place them in the desert for the birds and animals. He loved to go on long walks in the mountains and was willing to help any and everyone who was in need. Every time Doc went to El Paso, which was often, he would carry 10 gallons of water down to Orogrande and water the one and only tree that was there.
He loved his wife and family very much, always worrying and wanting to be there for them. Doc fell victim to Parkinson's disease, which, after a long battle, took his life. Alamogordo Hospice and Betty Dare Good Samaritan Center were there for him and his family at the end and did a wonderful caring job. Their love and care is unmatched; God bless them.
Doc has two sisters, Bessie Howard (deceased), and Ellen Merrill, of El Paso.
Doc will be missed, but he now lives in a new body with Christ and is dancing and celebrating his new life that we all hope for in Christ.
Cremation has taken place and there will be a memorial service at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007, at Saving Grace Church, 45 KC Road, Alamogordo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Alamogordo Home Care Hospice 1859 Indian Wells, Alamogordo, NM 437-3500.
