Virginia Ruth (Reeves) Harris

1925 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
Virginia Ruth Reeves Harris passed away Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at her Alamogordo home.
Virginia, lovingly referred to as "Sis" by many people, and as Mom by her children and grandchildren, was born on Aug. 1, 1925, in Wetumka, Okla. Her family left there during the depths of the Great Depression and headed for California. Once her parents saw the Mesilla Valley, they chose to make their home there and never left. Virginia was reared on Watson Lane in Mesilla Park by her parents, Floyd Elmer and Lula Mae Isgriggs Reeves. She had three sisters and three brothers.
Virginia married Olin F. Harris on Nov. 25, 1941. She traveled by troop train to many locations to be with him when he served during World War II. Upon his discharge from the service they returned to the Mesilla Valley, where they made their home and reared their children, four of whom survive. Those children and their spouses are: Olin Wayne (Virginia) Harris, Phyllis Ann (Tim) McCracken, Lloyd Gene (Rebecca) Harris and Patricia Lynn Barger.
She is also survived by one sister, Wanda Raphcock (Jim), of Colorado Springs, Colo., and a former son-in-law, Wade Atkins, of Alamogordo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her dear husband Olin F. Harris, daughter Sandra Lea Henley, and an infant son, Robert. She also leaves to mourn her passing 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Mom loved to travel with Olin (Pop) on any and all outdoor excursions, whether hunting, fishing or just being in nature. She also loved a trip to the casino. Mom and Pop lived for many years in Brazito, where the coffee was always hot and friends always welcome. She was a wonderful cook and homemaker, having learned to quilt in her later years. Her grandchildren are certain that nobody ever has or ever will make a better green chile enchilada.
She never tired of time spent with family. We will dearly miss her twinkly eyes of blue, her sweet smile and her droll sense of humor.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home chapel.
Burial will immediately follow at Monte Vista Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Rick McCracken, Todd McCracken, Michael Harris, Randy Harris, Brandon Atkins and Larry DuBois.
The Harris family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
