Walter Glenn Nabours Obituary
Walter Glenn Nabours, 93, passed away at his daughter's home in Alamogordo on Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, where he has resided since 2001.
Glenn was born in Harmon County, Okla., April 29, 1916, in a half dugout home to Walter L. and Myrtle L. Nabours. He was raised and grew up in and around Mangum, Vinson and Reed, Okla. He came to Deming in 1933 and worked on the farms of Gordon Jonas and Nick Vocale, with his father. He returned to Oklahoma in 1934, worked on the halves, on the county "Poor Farm." He married Verla M. Watson on Oct. 20. Before harvest time that year, he and his bride returned to Deming. He asked that he be sent his portion of the (dry land) farm income for that year. He received $5.12 for his portion, after harvesting expenses.
In late 1938, he and Verla purchased the "Firch" farm west of Deming, just south of the old Holy Cross Sanitarium, where they raised their children.
When the Holy Cross Sanitarium burned, he was there to try to help save as much as possible. It was a losing battle because of the lack of water. He lived on the farm until 2001, when he moved to Alamogordo, but still owned the farm until his death. This is almost 71 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Myrtle; wife, Verla; a brother, Laverne; his son Dorril; and his son Jimmie, who was killed in Vietnam.
He is survived by two sisters, Thelma Jo McFarland, of Canyon, Texas, Charlotte (Lee) Stafford, of Portola Valley, Calif.; one son, K. L. Nabours (Arlene), of Deming; two daughters, Nancy Iverson (Ron), of Alamogordo, and Irma (Bob) Lowry, of Albuquerque; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren, plus numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that contributions be made to Mimbres Christian Camp, 119 W. Maple St., Deming, NM 88030.
At his request, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held, but a family service for inurnment will be held at a later date.
