1941 - 2011 Obituary Condolences
Wilford J. "Sam" Franks, 70, passed away on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, in Alamogordo. He was born on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1941, in La Luz to Gamers and Frankie Ruth (Bonnell) Franks.
Sam was a member of a pioneer family in Otero County. He was a cowboy and loved horses and all animals. He wrote and read cowboy poetry. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He killed his first bear when he was 13 years old and was written up in the National Geographic magazine when he was a child. He was a Union Iron worker.
Wilford is survived by his sons; John Franks and wife Toni of Andrews, Texas, and Doug Franks and wife Jeri of Victoria, Texas; daughters; Darla Prewit and husband Rusty of Tularosa and Debbie Franks of Alamogordo and 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruthie Wilson of Alamogordo and Kay Stailey of Silver City and former wife, Darlene Slayton of Dallas.
A memorial service for Wilford John "Sam" Franks will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 20, at Tularosa Church of Christ with Terrell Davis officiating.
The Franks family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS.
