Wilkie McFarland, 88, formerly of Alamogordo, died Friday, June 27, 2008, in Hoopeston, Ill.
Mr. McFarland was born Jan. 1, 1920, in Hoopeston, Ill., to Arthur Bryan and Jennie (Wilkie) McFarland. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a colonel in the China-Burma-India Hump. He later became a test pilot for Boeing Aircraft. He was a farmer in the rural Hoopeston area with his two brothers, Don and Dick. He belonged to the Fellowship of Christian Farmers and became a certified organic farmer in 2002. Wilkie was also a member of Toastmasters from 1969 to 1974. He helped his wife for several years with the Girl Scouts in Alamogordo. He attended many Presbyterian churches as he traveled around the world with his military career. He held many deacon and elder positions within the Presbyterian Church. Wilkie enjoyed spending time with his family and visiting with his friends.
Survivors include his daughter Jennie Scott, of Marietta, Ga.; two grandchildren, John Scott and Lillian Scott, both of Georgia; a sister, Mary Jo Sims, of Dayton, Ohio; two brothers, Donald McFarland, of Hoopeston, and Dick McFarland, of Indianapolis; and three nephews, Marion and David Sims and Michael McFarland.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 41 years, Rosalie McFarland, in 1996.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1318 14th St., with the Rev. John Camp officiating.
Interment will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery.
Friends may call Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
