William Bruce “Steely” Butler Obituary

William Bruce "Steely" Butler was born on July 9, 1928, to Peggy and Bruce Cooper in Shawnee, Okla. He was the oldest of six children: brothers, Lynn, Jim and Steve, and sisters, Jackie and Peggy.

He graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in Los Angeles, Calif. and attended Cerritos College.
He served in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Toledo. He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 36 years. He began as an electrician and was promoted to an executive position in communications before retiring.

He married Ava Pauline Biggers on July 15, 1946.
Their children are: daughter Donnie Burt and her husband Bill, and a son Kevin Butler. Their grandchildren are Jarrod Burt and his wife Sarah, and Aaron Burt. Their great-grandchildren are Ava, Asher, Jaden and Joseph Burt.

Steely was well known for his keen wit and sense of humor. He was extremely intelligent, humble, incredibly generous and a talented handyman.
His favorite activities included: golf, bicycling, exercising, reading and working on his computer and smart phone. He enjoyed having early morning coffee with his buddies and, above all else, loved Jesus and his family.
He attended Mountain View Assembly of God Church and his favorite quote was "Man plans, God decides."

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Lynn and Jim, and his sister, Jackie.

A memorial service for Steely will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, at Mountain View Assembly of God Church located at 1900 23rd Street in Alamogordo.

The Butler family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home. Cremation will take place at PCS.
