William Edgar ‘Bill’ Odum Obituary
William Edgar "Bill" Odum passed away on Nov. 14, 2012, at 86 in Alamogordo. He suffered cardiac complications after knee-replacement surgery.
Bill Odum was born to William E. and Dayme Holloway Odum in Lone Oak, Texas, on Sept. 26, 1926. He lost his father while he was a young child. During the 1930s. he moved with his mother to Lamesa, Texas, where his older sister, Alice, had found employment as a teacher and married Weldon Lindsey. Bill attended Lamesa schools and then served in the military in the late 1940s to early 1950s.
Bill's father was an evangelical vocalist so it was not surprising that Bill became a musician. During the 1950s, he moved to the West Coast and made a career as a pianist and organist. He worked as a sideman and as a featured performer, specializing in popular standards, typically in restaurants and nightclubs. He lived and performed in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas, and he also toured around the west.
In addition to the music business, Bill applied his technical skills to work as an electronics technician.
In the 1980s, he retired to the countryside near Alamogordo, where he lived quietly, doing much of his own carpentry, wiring and other construction work. He also shared his musical knowledge with kids at the Boys and Girls Club.
Bill Odum is survived by his nephew Mack Lindsey, of Austin, Texas; niece Dr. Margaret Lindsey, of Rochester, N.Y.; Mack's wife, Margery; great-nieces Jenna Ling Lindsey, Leah Alice Lindsey, and Alice Abigail Lindsey and helpmate William "Billy" Whitley, of Alamogordo, a treasured partner in his last five years.
A memorial service will be held at Alamogordo Funeral Home Thursday, Dec. 20, at 2 p.m., with a reception following at the Alamo Senior Center. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Lamesa Memorial Park in Lamesa, Texas, on Dec. 28.
The Odum family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
