William M. Dalton, Col., U.S.A.F., Ret. Obituary
William M. Dalton, Sr., 82, passed away on March 9, 2013, in Alamogordo. He was born on Nov. 9, 1930, in Stephens City, Va., to William and Edith (Surratt) Dalton.
Bill (no one called him William) grew up in a rural area of Virginia, where he attended school with his brothers and excelled at baseball. He entered the United States Air Force in August of 1948. He was chosen to be one of the select few to act as one of the first classes to graduate from the Air Force Academy after its construction. Later, he attended and graduated from the U.S. Army War College and served in the Berlin Airlift and both the Korean War and Vietnam wars. During his time in the military, he was awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Force Commendation Medal. He retired a full Colonel from the Air Force in 1984 after 36 years of service. He worked for Dyncorp for several years following his retirement from the Air Force until he fully retired.
He settled in Alamogordo where he enjoyed coin collecting, crossword puzzles and spending time with his wife, Pat, children and grandchildren.
Bill will be remembered for his dedication to duty and country, unfailing generosity to family and friends, an unconditional love for his wife, family, flying and animals big and small.
Survivors include his two sons James Dalton and wife, Debbie, of Cloudcroft; and William M. Dalton Jr., of Northridge, Calif.; his daughter Kerry Anne Mann and husband, Greg, of Kapolei, Hawaii, five grandchildren and his brother Wayne Dalton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia G. Dalton, and his parents.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Cloudcroft United Methodist Church, 50 Chipmunk, Cloudcroft.
The Dalton family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the engagements. Cremation will take place at PCS.
