William N. "Bill" Mitchell Obituary
William N. "Bill" Mitchell, 79, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2011, in Alamogordo. He was born Thursday, Sept. 24, 1931, in Dimmitt, Texas, to Elmer Newton and Leora (Jerdon) Mitchell.
Bill enlisted in the Navy in 1950 and began his career on board the USS LST 914. He worked as part of the deck, signalman and navigation departments for Commander LST Division 12, the USS Cayuga County (LST529), and the USS Osborne (DD 846).
From 1959 to 1963, QM1 Mitchell was assigned as the petty officer in charge for the presidential yacht, serving with Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy. In 1963 he served on board the USS Edwards (DD 950) where he was promoted to the rank of chief petty officer and in 1966 was selected for commissioning as a warrant officer. Chief Warrant Officer Mitchell served aboard the USS Paul Revere (APA 248) and the USS Denver (LPD 9), completing four tours to Vietnam. Bill retired after a stellar 28-year career.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Tony, sister Bobbie Chester and a brother, Mayes Mitchell.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Alice Mitchell, of the family home; his daughters Karan Mitchell-Rhodes and Sherri Metzler; grandsons Andrew Sandoval and Mathew Meadows; and three great-grandsons.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home, 1334 N. Scenic Drive, Alamogordo, with Sacramento Lodge No. 24, A.F. & A.M. officiating. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy.
The Mitchell family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS.
