William "Bill" Sandefur

Obituary Condolences

On Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, Bill (William) Sandefur went up to his heavenly father to be with his family. Bill was born Jan. 26, 1933, in St. Louis. He was the son of Sam and Grace Sandefur, of Tularosa. He also had two sisters, Peggy Rutherford, of Tularosa, and Sue Robinson, of Missouri. Bill was married to Nellie (Navarro) Sandefur, daughter of Macarrio and Matilda Navarro, of Alamogordo, for 44 years before her death in June 2000.

Bill has resided in La Luz since he retired from the United States Army in 1973 at Fort Bliss, Texas. While in the Army, Bill served two tours in Vietnam and was awarded the following awards: one Bronze Star, one Meritorious Service Medal, three Army Commendation Medals, six Good Conduct Medals. He also participated in Arctic Survival School, as well as received a Certificate of Proficiency for master mechanic course, National Defense Service Medal and a Letter of Commendation for his service in the military. Bill worked at the Presto plant when he came home for a while, then did maintenance for the Yucca and Sands theaters before they closed, then worked at the Cinema Five movie theaters before retiring. He enjoyed having coffee with his friends at the local Texaco truck stop and Cortez Gas Company. Bill was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; he will be missed.

Bill was also preceded in death by his daughter Gracie Strawbridge and grandchild Matthew Strawbridge.

Survivors include his daughters Peggy Sue Garcia, of La Luz; Mary Ann Smith, of Alamogordo; Debbie Brisbin, of Long Beach, Wash.; and Terri Hill, of Columbia, Miss. Bill also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Donny Strawbridge, Eddie Garcia, Tina Mendez, Antonio Garcia, Jane Sandefur, Tabitha Litchgarn, Kenneth Brisbin and Julia Hill, and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home with Deacon Don Dickman officiating.

Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Tularosa, with full military honors. Please join the family afterward for a reception at the home of Peggy Garcia at 135 Griffin Road in La Luz.
