Willie J. Graham Obituary
Willie J. Graham passed away at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, with his wife by his side.
Mr. Graham was born on Dec. 27, 1925, in Louisville, Miss., to Johnnie Graham and Kattie Tally. Both parents preceded him in death, as did three brothers, Tom, Charlie and Sam, and two sisters, Pauline and Earline.
In 1944 Mr. Graham left for the Philippines as a Navy man (one year and nine months later Mr. Graham's medical condition was a cause for leaving the United States Navy).
On Feb. 22, 1946, he married Annie L. Moore in Louisville, and out of this union were born seven children. In 1956 Mr. Graham became a civil service worker at Holloman Air Force Base and moved the family to Alamogordo. In 1957 Mr. Graham worked as a truck driver. While employed at Holloman as a truck driver Mr. Graham enrolled in an electrician program and became a certified electrician at Holloman. Mr. Graham worked for 15 years before leaving due to an on-the-job injury. He also served in the National Guard for three years. In 1962 he became a member of Owen Chapel AME Church. He was appointed to the office of steward by the late Rev. Albert Simon Sr. While serving as steward at Owen Chapel, Mr. Graham developed and proposed a plan to acquire the current church pews through a weekly fundraising effort of $2 per week per member until the pews were bought and paid for. His favorite scripture was Matthew 26:18-30.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 66 years, Annie L. Graham; three sons, Johnny C., of Alamogordo, Glen W. and wife, Delores, of Albuquerque, and David A. and wife, Evelyn, of Leesville, La.; four daughters, Betty Thomas, Vernice and husband, Michael, Minnie and Doris and husband, Vance, all of Los Angeles; one sister, Gertrude, of El Paso; one brother-in-law, Robert Lee, of Mesa, Ariz.; and one sister-in-law, Annie K., of Alamogordo.
He is also survived by his grandchildren Teresa, Anthony Thomas, Carla, Antonio, Anthony Graham, Laura, Sarah, David A. Graham Jr., Dawn, Joseph, Jody, Nikia and Kenya; 35 great-grandchildren, one preceded him in death (Destiny); four great-great-grandchildren; one very special friend, Jane, of Albuquerque; and a host of cousins, friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 5, 2010, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Warren L. Robinson officiating.
Interment will be 1 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2010, at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors provided by the U.S. Navy.
Friends may call on Friday, March 5, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
The Graham family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
