Wilma Marie Pickard Obituary

Wilma Marie Pickard, aged 91, died peacefully on February 1, 2016 at Betty Dare Good Samaritan Rest Home.

In the early 1950's Wilma and her husband Jack Denton were despondent after several years of marriage and no children. They were living in a small country town in southern Illinois where Jack worked in the oil fields. An old country doctor told them that since there was no physiological reason not to become pregnant that perhaps they should adopt. So they found a local woman who had three children, ages 6, 4, and 2 years old that she could not care for and did not want. The adoption was arranged and three months later Wilma was pregnant with her first born. Instant family of four children that later turned to six.

Wilma thoroughly enjoyed family reunions where hours and hours were spent on music, dancing, card playing and dominoes. She cherished every hour of family interaction especially if it involved her brothers Gayle and Raymond Cochrain.

In her mid 40's Wilma decided she wanted to continue her education and earned a bachelor's degree from NMSU in special education.
In the early 1970's Wilma married Frank Pickard, a retired USAF M.Sgt. Together they built a wonderful desert oasis north of Alamogordo as their home.
In addition to obtaining her degree, Wilma opened her own business. She was an accomplished crafter, potter, jewelry maker and artist.

At the young age of 86 Wilma joined her daughter D'Ann Dunigan and her son Ed Denton in the operations Kitty City NM. Wilma worked daily with D'Ann at Classy Cats Thrift Store which supports Kitty City NM. There she sorted clothing, folded bags and greeted customers until she became unable to continue.

Wilma has been at Betty Dare Good Sam for the last seven months where she received loving care and attention from their staff.

There will be a graveside service for family and friends at Monte Vista Cemetery on Saturday February 6, 2016 at 2PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent in her name to Kitty City NM, 56 Danley Ranch Road, Alamogordo, NM 88310.

A heartfelt thanks to Hamilton O'Dell Funeral Home for their professional and caring services that they provided.
