Benjamin Douglas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 16 to Oct. 17, 2017.

Benjamin Thomas Douglas was born September 9, 1980 in Johannesburg, South Africa where his family was temporarily living due to his father's employment. Ben was the sixth child of Robert and Glaya Douglas. Ultimately two more children joined the family. When Ben was six months old the family moved back to their home in San Juan Capistrano, California where Ben lived for the remainder of his growing up years. He loved music and participated in marching band and choir during high school. He graduated from San Clemente High School in 1999 and attended Brigham Young University Idaho for a year before serving a mission for the LDS Church in Toronto Canada. Upon returning from his mission he returned to BYU Idaho where he earned a BA in Social Work and participated in Choir and in new student orientation.
While attending BYU-I Ben met Annie Stewart and the couple was married for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in 2005. After graduating from BYU-I, Ben and Annie moved to San Juan Capistrano, California and Ben attended Cal State Long Beach while working full time. He received a Masters Degree in Social Work from UCLB. Ben and Annie's first child was born while they were living in California.
After graduating from UCLB Ben accepted employment in Idaho and the family moved to Blackfoot. During their time in Blackfoot Ben became a License Clinical Social Worker. For the past six years Ben has worked as a social worker and counselor at Bingham Memorial Hospital in Blackfoot. He blessed the lives of many and has been loved and respected by both co-workers and clients.
During their time in Blackfoot Ben and Annie have been blessed with three additional daughters. Ben has served in church as a teacher, scoutmaster, choir director, ward organist, and Young Men's President.
Throughout his life Ben has been a blessing in the lives of his family, friends, and associates. He was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, and friend. His family and friends have described him as kind, compassionate, fun-loving and unselfish. He loved his family and he loved doing things with them in the outdoors.
On October 9, 2017 Ben succumbed to colon cancer and passed through the veil to return to his Heavenly Father. He is survived by his wife Annie, daughters Zoe (9), Arleigh (7), Phoebe (5), and Nina (3), his parents, Robert and Glaya Douglas, of San Juan Capistrano, CA, siblings Brian, Katie, Nathan, Curtis, Tyler, Jacob, and Justin. He will be greatly missed.
Funeral services for Ben will be held Saturday, October 21 at 2 p.m. at the Blackfoot East Stake Center, 1289 Mt. Putnam in Blackfoot. The family will meet with friends on Friday, October 20 from 6-8 p.m. at the Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling, Blackfoot, and for one hour prior to the services on Saturday.

My sincere condolences to the family. Ben will be missed. I had the pleasure of getting to know him when we consulted as colleagues. He was extremely motivated to help others- internal motivation, on his own time- which is rare. He helped me in my work with those affected by trauma. I hope he knew how many lives he saved and improved through his work. I am so grateful to have known him and very saddened that he is gone. His passion to help others was inspiring. His legacy will live on through the lives he saved. My sincere condolences to the family.

To the Family -
It is never easy to lose a loved one, especially at such a young age. Please find comfort in God's promise found at John 6:40 which says that soon we will see all our loved ones again.
My deepest condolences

Dear Sister Douglas and family,

We were saddened to hear of the passing of your husband and our friend, Elder Benjamin Douglas.

It seems that there are times when the inevitable comes prematurely. These times try us more because the issues of why as pertains to the loss of a young, vibrant man - a father and husband - happen when it seems as though he is most needed in the here and now. The truth is I don't know why. I can only trust that sometime, somewhere we will have the answer.

Elder Douglas was a quiet, yet purposeful individual. He came to serve and did so very well. He was one of the competent ones. Liked and respected by all. I am grateful to have labored with him.

Know that Sister Hart and I have you and your children in our prayers and feel sure that you will feel of his presence many times in the future. May you find some peace in hope given us through the sealing power of the temple and the comfort of the Spirit that emanates from the love of our Heavenly Father.

With our heartfelt love,

President and Sister James Hart
