Alvon Jerry Hansen Obituary
Alvon Jerry Hansen, 85, of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away Saturday, February 28, 2015 at home, surrounded by his family.
Jerry was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 30, 1929 to Alvon and Denice Chamberlain Hansen. He was an only child. He grew up in the Riverside/Thomas area and attended elementary school at the Wilson School and high school at the Thomas High School. He was so smart, he skipped the 8th grade. Jerry went on to Ricks College where he met his sweetheart, Margaret Hillam. They were married on April 11, 1952 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
Jerry served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Central States Mission. After getting married, Jerry was drafted into the Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from the University of Idaho in 1957. He worked for Basic American and then taught school for 30 years in the Snake River School District. He taught geography and was the Ag teacher and the FFA advisor. He also ran a small family farm where he taught their eight children how to work.
After retirement, Jerry and Margaret served an LDS mission to the Ohio Columbus Mission. During Jerry's life, he was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in the bishopric, as a Sunday School teacher, High Priest group leader and as a home teacher.  Jerry was a cowboy at heart and loved his horses and the adventures he had with them and his family. His greatest love was his sweet wife, Margaret, his family and spending time with them.  Jerry and Margaret have 45 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
Jerry suffered from Alzheimer's in his later years and always kept a cheerful and grateful attitude for all those who came to visit and take care of him.
He is survived by his children, Eric (Janis) Hansen of Pingree, Idaho; Jerralyn (Lyle) Bruce of Lacey, Wash.; Scott (Peggy) Hansen of Blackfoot, Idaho; Kent (Paula) Hansen of Boardman, Ore.; Mark (Pam) Hansen of Orem, Utah; Marvin (Marie) Hansen of Arimo, Idaho; George (Stephanie) Hansen of Pocatello, Idaho and Lisa (Jeff) Watt of Blackfoot, Idaho.
Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; and two grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the Thomas LDS Church, 1059 W 100 S, with Bishop Jeff Watt conducting. Family will meet with friends and relatives from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2015 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot and for one hour prior to services at the church.  Interment will follow at the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery with military honors. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.hawkerfuneralhome.com.
