Carol Louise Peterson Obituary
Our amazing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Carol Louise Butikofer Peterson, 86, passed away peacefully on Dec. 31, 2017, in Rexburg, Idaho. Carol was born Sept. 11, 1931, in Idaho Falls, to Walter Hyrum and Leona Gundersen Butikofer.
She was the second of seven children and was raised in the Coltman area where she learned the value of hard work through gardening with her mother and farm work with her father.
Her mother always said that Carol was a happy baby and a very pleasant little girl who was loved very much. She attended Fairview Grade School and graduated from Ucon High School.
On Jan. 22, 1951, Carol married Vernal Orland Peterson, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They were married for 56 years until Orland passed away in 2007. Carol and Orland moved around quite a bit at the beginning of their journey together trying to find work.
They finally settled in a home on Parks Road in Moreland, Idaho. Carol and Orland were blessed with six children. Carol enjoyed being a mother and worked tirelessly for the sake of her children. She was giving of her time and her talents and if she had it and someone wanted it, she would give it.
Many times she was the first person up in the morning and the last person to bed at night. She was a wonderful seamstress, an extraordinary cook, and a wonderful friend. Her many talents that she shared with others are immeasurable. She always tried her best to make everyone happy.
Carol was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had a wonderful testimony of the gospel and shared her testimony often. She had many church callings over the years. It didn't matter what the calling was, she worked her hardest and was faithful at every task that was given her.
Our lives will never be the same without her, yet we celebrate her legacy with joy and the knowledge that we are an eternal family. We feel her spirit and her love, and know she will continue to be a light in our lives.
Carol is survived by her six children, Steven (Diane) of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Bryce (Vicky) of Groveland, Ulene (Gaylen) VanOrden of Pingree, Carolene (Parker) Wadsworth of Boise, Jann (Michael) Kelsch of Sandy, Utah, and Maralee (Brad) Turpin of Groveland; 30 grandchildren, including her youngest grandson, Devin Turpin, who is currently serving an LDS mission in Ghana; 70, soon to be 72, great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by two sisters, Lenora Ford of Bountiful, Utah, and Deanna Spaulding, of Idaho Falls; three brothers, Merle (Ulene) Butikofer of Rigby, Linden (Lois) Butikofer and Don (Gayla) Butikofer both of Idaho Falls; sister-in-law Barbara Gneiting of Groveland, brother-in-laws, Glen Lyle (Jean) Peterson of Groveland, and DeWayne Traughber of Gooding.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Orland; a sister, Rosemary; and great-grandson, Jaden Sunderland.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, at the Pingree first Ward Chapel. Family will meet with friends and relatives on Thursday, Jan. 4 from 6-8 p.m. at the Hawker Funeral Home and again for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in the Taylor Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank The Homestead Assisted Living Center, in Rexburg, and her caregivers with Avalon and Solace Hospice, for tenderly caring for our mother and treating her with dignity and kindness in her final few years. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hawkerfuneralhome.com.
