Carol Swainston Merrill Obituary
Carol Swainston Merrill, 82, of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Bingham Memorial Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born November 9, 1933 in Whitney, Idaho to Charles Swainston and Vivian Carrie Condie.
When Carol was nine, her mother passed away; her father later married Sarah Ellen Lewis in 1945.
Carol went to Whitney School and graduated from Preston High May 1951. She wanted to be a nurse, and was accepted into a nursing program at the Idaho Falls LDS Hospital. For the first six months she had to go to Ricks College for her book learning.  She met Douglas Roy Merrill while taking a microbiology class. Douglas called the dormitory to find out the name of the girl with the curly black hair. They started dating and married at the Logan Temple April 25, 1952.
Carol and Douglas were some of the first to farm on the desert west of Blackfoot. They worked together to clear out lava rocks and sagebrush on 120 acres. There they raised three children, Kristy Merrill, Michael Douglas Merrill and Craig Allen Merrill. They later developed a dairy farm, which left them time to do things they enjoyed.
In the 80's Carol served with the Bingham Crisis Center, then with the Pocatello Courts' Guardian Ad Litem | CASA program, but she was always home to feed the calves at night. She also loved oil painting, crocheting, and sewing; she taught the latter in 4H for many years.
Carol was very active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, her favorite calling was work director. She also did name extractions for 20 years in Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian.
Carol is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Wayne Charles Swainston; and granddaughter, Lacey Nikole Merrill.
She is survived by her husband Douglas; daughter, Kristy Merrill; and her sons, Michael Douglas and Craig Allen Merrill.
