Dana Roy Smith Obituary
Dana Roy Smith, 59, of Pingree, Idaho, passed away on July 13, 2015, from kidney failure.
Dana was born on July 18, 1955 to Joyce Hansen Smith and Roy Kenneth Smith in Pocatello, Idaho.
As a child, Dana lived in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; Fargo, North Dakota; as well as Great Falls and Billings, Montana, while his father was a federal locomotive inspector. Of these places, Dana's favorite was Billings, Montana, and while there he enjoyed driving vintage tractors for Oscar Cook's museum.
His father was later transferred to Portland, Oregon during Dana's senior year of high school, so Dana decided to reside with his grandparents, Edith and Chancy Hansen. He graduated from Rigby High School in May of 1973, and soon after married Jolene Dinsdale in the Logan LDS Temple in Logan, Utah in September, 1973.
Dana and Jolene relocated to Hillsboro, Oregon, where Dana worked as a hostler for the Union Pacific Railroad in nearby Portland, Oregon.  In 1975, they welcomed their daughter, Shelly to the family.
Dana enlisted with the United States Air Force for a brief time and was honorably discharged, then briefly worked in Idaho Falls, Idaho, until the Union Pacific Railroad reactivated his employment. Dana and his family moved to LaGrande, Oregon, where he was able to join into engineer service, becoming a locomotive engineer in March,1976. While in LaGrande, Dana and Jolene's son, Kenneth, was born in 1979.
Soon after Kenneth's birth, the Union Pacific Railroad transferred Dana to LasVegas, Nevada, where he worked for nine years. Wanting to return to Idaho to be closer to both his and Jolene's family, Dana asked for, and was granted a transfer back to Idaho. After a brief stay in Pocatello, Idaho, Dana settled in Pingree, Idaho. In total, Dana worked for theUnion Pacific Railroad for 33 years, until he was injured on the job and given medical disability retirement.
Dana was preceded in death by his parents, Joyce Hansen Smith and Roy Kenneth Smith; as well as his grandparents, Edith and Chancy Hansen, and Leroy and Gladys Smith. He is survived by his wife,  Jolene of Pingree, Idaho; his daughter, Shelly; and her husband, David Santos of Chubbuck, Idaho; his son, Kenneth Smith of Blackfoot, Idaho; his brother, Allan Smith of Pingree, Idaho; and his stepmother, Louise Smith of Pocatello, Idaho.
His family will scatter his ashes at their family ranch in Spencer, Idaho, which was one of Dana's favorite places to visit.
As requested by Dana, no services will be held.  Cremation will take place under the direction on Hawker Funeral Home in Blackfoot.  Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.hawkerfuneralhome.com.
