Della Reader Obituary
Della Reader, 87, of
Blackfoot, Idaho passed
away peacefully Saturday,
September 23, 2017
at the Gables of Ammon
in Ammon, Idaho.
Della was born December
8, 1929, to Ron and
Velma Carter. She was
the oldest of their seven
children. Della grew up in
Shelley Idaho and graduated
from Shelley High
In 1947, Della married
Richard Jensen.
They owned a farm in
Moreland, Idaho. They
later divorced. This union
blessed her life with three
children: Cheryle, Colleen,
and Steve.
Della attended nursing
school and graduated as
an LPN from Idaho State
University in 1964. That
same year she married
Jay Reader. They made
their home in Hemet,
California for two years
before moving back to
Blackfoot, Idaho, where
they established their
home and careers.
Della worked for Bingham
Memorial Hospital,
and then for Dr. Bud Miller
for eighteen years. She
was a positive light in his
practice and was loved
by those she served.
She retired in 1997, and
spent much of her time
with Jay gardening and
caring for their beautiful
yard. When Jay become
ill, they moved back into
town where Della provided
constant care for Jay
until he passed in 2006.
She missed him every
day after and longed to
be reunited with him. Being
his wife was the highlight
of her life.
Della was a lover of
chocolate and a good
cup of coffee. She loved
her dogs, Murray, Grizzy,
and Junie. She enjoyed
going to lunch with her
daughters and attending
family dinners. She was
proud of her children and
their families. She was a
wonderful cook and enjoyed
baking. Recently
she spent her time doing
yardwork, gardening,
reading, and writing in
journals. Della crocheted
beautiful blankets as gifts
for her grandchildren.
Her journals and these
keepsakes will be treasures
to her family in her
She was preceded in
death by her parents, her
husband, her brothers,
Jim Carter, Dick Carter,
and Frank Carter; sister,
Lucille King and brotherin-
law Glen Frandsen.
Della is survived by her
two daughters, Cheryle
(Roger) Fowler and Colleen
(Chris) Thompson;
her son, Steve (Becky)
Reader; thirteen grandchildren;
great-grandchildren; and
one great-great-granddaughter.
She is also
survived by two sisters,
Jenny (Larry) Clark and
Fern Frandsen; three sisters-
in-law, Sheila Carter,
Debbie Carter, and Joan
Carter; and a brother-inlaw,
Mike King.
Funeral services will be
held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday,
September 30, 2017,
at Hawker Funeral Home,
132 S. Shilling Ave.,
Blackfoot, Idaho with her
children and grandchildren
sharing memories
of Della's life. The family
will meet with friends
from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.,
prior to the service at the
funeral home. Interment
will be in the Grove City
Cemetery in Blackfoot,
In lieu of flowers, the
family requests that donations
in Della's honor
be made to the Blackfoot
Community Dinner Table
for local families in need.
