Glenna Merrill Obituary
Our beloved mother, Glenna, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Nov. 26, 2017. The oldest of four daughters, Glenna was born May 12, 1921 to Roland Thurgood and Martha Pugsley Parkin in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Their family home was in the Sugarhouse neighborhood. She graduated from South High School in 1938 and Utah State Agricultural College in 1942, mastering the scientific study of nutrition. Glenna practiced as a dietician from 1942-44 at Oklahoma A & M in Stillwater and the University of Oklahoma in Norman. From 1945-47 she continued her work at the University of Utah.
Glenna met and married Morgan Reed Merrill as he completed work on a degree in medicine at the University of Utah.
Their experiences together included a lifelong love of travel throughout the United States and Europe.
Reed and Glenna settled in Brigham City where Reed began his medical practice and Glenna became active in civic and community affairs. Visitors were always generously welcomed into their home and the family swimming pool often became a gathering place.
Glenna was a member of the Brigham City 13th Ward of the .
Glenna was a genealogist, stamp collector, quilter, golfer and bridge expert (she played in one of several bridge clubs for over 50 years, retiring at age 95). She was a prolific scrap-booker and has captured each moment of her adult life in her books - treasured gifts for her family.
Most notably and with great honor, Glenna was a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who guided her children and grandchildren with affection and dedication.
She produced detailed books of remembrance for each of her children and grandchildren and gifted hand-stitched quilts to each grandchild.
Our mother created wonderful family gatherings for holidays and never forgot a birthday. While dad lead the family, mom anchored it.
Glenna was preceded in death by her husband Reed and sisters Elaine Johnson and Rose Chlarson.
She is survived by her sister Geraldine Walton. Our dear mother leaves behind a legacy of love and wisdom to sons Randall J. (Carolyn) Merrill of Orem, David R. (Carol) Merrill of Roy, Jon R. (Becky) Merrill of Boise, Idaho and daughters Marie Ann (Don) Peart of Brigham City and Susan (Craig) Davis of Blackfoot. The legacy of Mom and Dad is enriched by 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Brigham City LDS 13th Ward, 25 North 300 East, on Friday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. Friends may call on Friday at the 13th Ward from 9-10:40 a.m.
Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery following funeral services.
