Heber Carl Cronquist, Jr., "Carl", 87, of Blackfoot passed away on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 in Blackfoot at home.
Carl was born on Jan. 27, 1930 in Logan, Utah to Heber Carl Cronquist, Sr., and Celia Poppleton Williamson Cronquist.
Carl graduated high school from North Cache High, and took some courses at Utah State. He fell in love and married the love of his life, VaLoye Balls, on March 12, 1950. They were later solemnized on July 19, 1952, in the Logan Utah LDS Temple.
Together Carl and VaLoye had six children; Dennis, David, Brent, Rocky, Donna, and Nancy.
He won the Intermountain Championship Chariot race in the 1962 prior to it becoming known as the Worldwide Cutter Championship. He was a six-time circuit chariot racing champion and was a director of the Northern Quarter Horse Association.
Carl trained race horses most of his life and had won many awards as top trainer throughout his career. He was inducted in the Eastern Idaho Horseman's Hall of fame.
He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and trap shooting and giving many of his woodworking treasures to grandkids and friends.
Carl was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served many callings. He was the president of the Sunday School, secretary of the High Priests, and a temple ordinance worker.
Carl is survived by his wife, VaLoye; his children and their spouses, Dennis (Becky) Cronquist of Shelton, Wash., David (Sue) Cronquist of Blackfoot, Rocky (Teresa) Cronquist of Blackfoot, Donna Cronquist (Chris) of Blackfoot, and Nancy (David) Diaz of Blackfoot; his siblings, Jerry Cronquist of Malad, ID, Joyce (Don) Olsen of Salt Lake City, Utah, William "Bill" Cronquist of Provo, Utah, Pauline Thaine, Puyallup, Wash., and Idella Stockwell of Henderson, Nev., along with 20 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and his son Steven Brent Cronquist, granddaughter, Crystal Gail Cronquist,
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 13 at 11 a.m. at the Thomas LDS Church building. A viewing will be held on Friday, May 12 at Hawker Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. and again one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment with be at the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the Salem Valley Hospice for the wonderful care.
