Janet Jensen Obituary
Janet Jensen, Blackfoot High School Class of 1966, was surrounded by friends as she passed away in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Oct. 31, 2015. She was a retired CPA and an adventure traveler with her lifelong companion, Greg Tully.
Janet was born Sept. 24, 1948, in Salt Lake City Utah, and grew up on the family ranch about 5 miles east of Wapello.
After her first semester at Idaho State University she visited Hawaii on Christmas vacation and simply decided to stay. She worked as a waitress to pay for her education at the University of Hawaii before opening her CPA practice in Honolulu. She also taught at the school and was a generous benefactor.
She climbed the Grand Teton and Mt. Denali, hiked to the top of Mt. Fuji in Japan and traveled to Africa with her sister Susan to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Janet was later invited to be a member of the first U.S. Mountaineering expedition invited to China in the 1970's and after a magnificent welcoming banquet the group traveled through Mongolia where the nomadic people had not seen a white person since the 1930's.
Together, she and Greg had adventures on every continent but Antarctica. They trekked a part of the Inca Trail in the Andes, hiked across the base of Mt. Everest, backpacked through the Swiss Alps, rode elephants in India and toured the ancient Buddhist ruins of Angkor Wat. They traveled on the Trans Siberia Railway from Beijing to Moscow and island-hopped with a sailboat through the Greek Isles. Between travels, they divided their time between their Honolulu home and their beach house on Oahu's north shore that is famous for its enormous waves for surfing.
As a young girl Janet won national awards with her 4H work and credited her experience there with helping develop her leadership skills. She journeyed far from being the little girl who drove the tractor while her father and brother loaded the hay bales on the wagon. As an adult she literally traveled to the ends of the earth.
She is survived by her lifelong companion Greg Tully; her sister Susan Jensen Singer (BHS class of 1964) and husband Paul of Santa Barbara, Calif.; brother Jerrold Jensen (BHS class of 1959) and wife Nannette of Visalia, Calif.; nephew Michael Jensen and family of Hanford, Calif.; niece Jennifer Marcou and family of Mercer Island, Wash.;and niece Jodi Jensen of Milwaukee, Wisc. She was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Irma Jensen of Island Park, Idaho.
Aloha, Janet. You chose your own path and lived life to its fullest.
