Jerry Edwin Kracaw Obituary
Jerry Edwin Kracaw, 82, of Winnemucca, fought his last battle and passed away with his family by his side on Feb. 4, 2017 at Renown Hospital in Reno NV.
He was born Nov. 12, 1934 to Clair and Margaret Kracaw in Idaho Falls, and lived in Blackfoot ID with his parents and siblings for most of his early life. He participated in basketball and football at Blackfoot High School, graduating in 1953. He went on to earn his business degree from Idaho State University in 1957.
Jerry was introduced to the love of his life, Dorothy Ann Alexander, by their friend Linda Hepworth. They married on June 14, 1957 and happily shared the next 59 years together. They started their married life in Blackfoot and soon moved to Virginia for his military obligation, where he was DC 2nd Lieutenant. After his honorable discharge, they returned to Blackfoot where they were soon blessed with three fine sons. Jerry joined his father in the family business, growing and shipping Russet Burbank potatoes in Blackfoot. Clair Kracaw & Sons expanded to Buckskin Basin near Fort Hall ID and eventually to Winnemucca. Over the course of his 28 years at Winnemucca Farms, Jerry was involved in growing, shipping and selling Kracaw's Bakewell potatoes across the country.
Jerry enjoyed fishing and looked forward to the end of harvest, which meant the annual steelhead fishing trips on the Salmon River. He wasn't always successful, but the awe-inspiring scenery made the trip worthwhile. During winters, he took every opportunity to join a group for snowmobiling or ski trips. When the snow melted, or when he could travel to warmer climates, it was time for golf and he loved all the courses he could play.
His greatest joy of all was visiting with family and friends. After retirement, Jerry and Dorothy loved to summer in Graeagle, Calif. and winter in Phoenix Ariz. Golf and lively conversation (especially with a good vodka martini) was the perfect mix for the long lasting friendships that were made and strengthened each year.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law Tack Nakamura. He is survived by his wife Dorothy; sons Kurt (Cindy), Scott, and Jim (Annie); grandchildren Kole, Ryan, Emma and Will; brother Don (Terri), sister Coralee Nakamura, and many nieces and nephews.
Please join the family for a graveside service at the Winnemucca Cemetery on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at The Martin Hotel. Sonoma Funeral Home is handling funeral arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the Winnemucca Jr. Golf Program (c/o Karen Aldrich, PO Box 467) or The Boys and Girls Club (PO Box 2274), Winnemucca NV 89446.
The Kracaw family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff in the Trauma ICU at Renown Medical Center for the care and compassion they provided to Jerry and all of us in his final days.
