In 1964 he attended Utah State, graduating in 1966. He then attended Arizona State University where he received his masters degree in 1968.
He married Bonnie Larsen on October 10, 1964. Together they had four daughters. They later divorced in 1988.
He started his career as a licensed clinical social worker in Ukiah, California until moving to Salt Lake City, Utah where he had a successful private practice.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he held several positions. He liked to travel and enjoyed teasing and nicknaming his grandchildren.
Jerry is survived by his four daughters, Rakel Gardner of Clayton NC, Kristi (Mark) Woodland of Riverton UT, Melissa (Bryon) Zirker of Bothell WA and Stephanie Gardner of Gilbert AZ. He is also survived by his brother, Rick (Carol) Gardner from San Juan Capistrano, California; he has 13 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. He has many nieces and nephews who enjoyed his sense of humor and shenanigans.
