Jewel Eldean Christensen Smith, 86, a lifetime resident of Blackfoot, Idaho, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Friday, Nov. 14, 2014.
Jewel was born on Jan. 6, 1928 to William Dewey Christensen and Elva Catheren Nelson Christensen in Blackfoot, Idaho. Jewel graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1945 and attended one year of college at Idaho State University.
Jewel married her childhood friend, William Wilbur Smith, on May 11, 1948 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They built their home in Blackfoot the first year of their marriage and have lived there for 65 years.
Jewel was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served faithfully in stake and ward Relief Society callings and stake and ward Primary callings.
Jewel and her husband, Bill, served a mission on Temple Square in Salt Lake City in 1990 and they served in the Pennsylvania Pittsburg Mission in 1993 and 1994. They also served in the Idaho Falls Temple. She served her family and others selflessly for her entire life.
Jewel is survived by her husband, William, of Blackfoot; her brother, Calvin (Marva) Christensen of Blackfoot; four sons, Robert W. (Catherine), Scott N., Larry D. (JaNae) of Blackfoot and Mark D. (Jeannette) of Salt Lake City, Utah; two daughters, Karen (Ronald) Howard of Gilbert, Arizona and Susan (Dale) Christiansen of Blackfoot; 35 grandchildren; and 44 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Rexford (Edith) Christensen; sister, Elma (Marlin) Bingham; one grandson, Brady Knight Smith; and one great-granddaughter, Cozette Emmaline Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014 at the Blackfoot South Stake Center, 900 Riverton Road, with Bishop Wes Potter conducting.
Family will meet with friends and relatives from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, 2014 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot and for one hour prior to services at the church.
