John Caston McCormack Jr. M.D. Obituary
Our gentle and kind father, husband, brother, and grandfather, John Caston McCormack, Jr. M.D., 81, passed away July 12, 2017 In Salt Lake City. He was born to John Caston McCormack, Sr. and Miriam Huff McCormack on October 3, 1935 in Shreveport, LA. His wife, family, relatives, and friends are grieving the loss of this strong, intelligent and caring person.
John was a football star, a good student, a high school class president and a champion for others. Kind and supportive, a friend for those in need, a guide and mentor, he exemplified the kind of life of purpose and meaning that makes for a better world.
He was a doctor, a Captain in the Army, a psychiatrist, and a clinical director of two state hospitals, Idaho and New Mexico. He was a powerful advocate for the mentally ill and for reform of their health care. He shared his expertise on hospital, community, and statewide clinical, programmatic, and mental health issues and provided consultation to regional mental health centers, the Department of Health and Welfare, and other agencies. He worked for the State Hospital South in Blackfoot, Idaho for more than 21 years and was instrumental in helping the hospital receive accreditation by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. He dedicated his life to serving the least, the lost, and the last.
John retired in 2006. He spent time enjoying his family, camping, watching Westerns, and listening to his vast music collection of Dixieland, Boston Pops, Lawrence Welk, Willie Nelson and Lefty Frizzell. He was also a lyrical master, always quick to come up with a new tune or rhyme which he would sing proudly to family and friends.
John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Becky Matson McCormack of Draper, Utah; his daughters Susan Lynne Zimmerman (Troy) of Lovettsville, Virginia, Juli McCormack Draper of Sandy, Utah, and his son John Craig McCormack (Bret) of Seattle, Washington. He was a hero to his brother Kenneth McCormack and beloved to his sister Janet Yearian; and a loving grandfather to Josef, Cole, Caitlin, Caston, and Lindsay.
His last years were difficult, but he was surrounded by many friends and family. And the love and support of all of you has meant so much. Special thanks go to his many caring doctors, nurses, Alta View Acute Care, Cascades Skilled Nursing Center, and to the Rocky Mountain Care hospice.
A celebration of life will be held in August. For condolences please visit www.broomheadfuneralhome.com.
May peace, love, and the sun shine upon John and all of us on our journey home.
