Karen Miwako Sandmann Obituary
Karen M. Sandmann
April 10, 1964 - Oct. 3, 2015
BURLEY - Karen Miwako Sandmann, a 51-year-old resident of Burley, Idaho, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Karen was born April 10, 1964, in Blackfoot, Idaho, to Yuzo and Waka (Nakayama) Ugaki. She was the oldest of three siblings, but grew up in a large extended family of grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins who shared the true meaning of family bonds.
She was an avid reader with a great passion for learning. She graduated from Blackfoot High School as salutatorian in 1982. During her junior high and high school years, she was active in many organizations which carried over into her college years. She attended Idaho State University (ISU) where she competed on the debate squad, served as Election Board chairperson, and participated in several other church and university organizations. She received a B.S. in pharmacy and a B.A. in chemistry in 1988, and went on to earn a Pharmacy Doctorate with honors in 1990 from ISU.
While attending ISU, she met her husband-to-be, Karl Sandmann. They married in Burley, Idaho, in 1992, and raised two beautiful daughters, Kimberly and Avilyn.
She worked as a pharmacist in many different pharmacies and finally settled in at Cassia Regional Medical Center, after her marriage to Karl. In her career she was not only a dedicated professional, but showed great compassion and consideration for her coworkers (pharmacists, doctors, nurses, secretaries, etc.) - many of whom became her friends. She also had great compassion for the patients she cared for.
Karen was loved by all who knew her. Her sincerity and caring nature endeared her to everyone she associated with. She would go out of her way to help others and make them feel comfortable and confident in whatever they were involved in. Many people could, and would, call her friend. She was proudest of her children, and, when not at work, was supportive of their many activities, school outings, dance recitals, 4-H, etc.
Karen was preceded in death by her father, Yuzo Ugaki. She is survived by her mother, Waka Ugaki of Idaho Falls, Idaho; her husband, Karl Sandmann, and two daughters, Kimberly and Avilyn, all of Burley; and two siblings, Steve Ugaki of Idaho Falls, and Janice (Doug) Greally of Park City, Utah.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the United Methodist Church, 450 E. 27th St., in Burley.  The Venerable Janet King will officiate.
A viewing for family and friends will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, and from 10 until 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church.
The family would like to thank our extended family and friends who have provided food and support, sent flowers and cards that sustained us through these past few months. We are enormously grateful and blessed by all the support and care which has been extended - thank you.
