Mary O. Stander Obituary
Mary O. Stander, 91, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 12, 2018, at her home in Thomas from natural causes.
She was born October 1, 1926, to Dewey Stringham and Salome Louise Kunzler Olsen in Preston, Idaho.
Mary grew up in Preston, then moved to Moreland where she attended most of high school. She returned to Preston for her senior year, where she graduated.
She married Wendell England Stander on November 14, 1946 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. He preceded her in death on Jan. 25, 2012.
Mary was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in all auxiliaries in her church, including visiting teaching and as the Relief Society President. She served a mission with her husband, Wendell, in the Philippines Quezon City Mission. She also served as a temple worker for 22 years.
She enjoyed singing in the Thomas Triple Trio. She taught piano and cello and played cello in the Snake River Community Orchestra. As a young woman, she taught school for a year in Preston. She kept the books for the family farm up until the time of her death. She was an excellent gardener and a hard worker in all she did. She was a wonderful seamstress and enjoyed canning. She enjoyed being a homemaker and especially loved being a mother and grandmother.
Mary is survived by her children, Delwyn (Catherine) Stander of Thomas, Marian (Dennis) Cummings of Thomas, Lowell (Ellen) Stander of Athens, Georgia, Celia (Ron) Simmons of Riverside, Lyle Dewey (Merri) Stander of Riverside and Elaine (Bill) Stevenson of Moreland; 35 grandchildren, 101 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. She is also survived by her siblings James Olsen, Menan, ID, Barbara (Dean) Vaterlaus, Arizona, Beth (Kirt) Olson, Texas, Ruth Melling, Burley, ID, John (Suzie) Olsen, Middleton, ID, and In-Laws Ferrol Simpson, Idaho Falls, ID, and Diane Olsen, Willard, UT.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell and her parents, Dewey and Louise Olsen; siblings, Lynn Olsen, Kathryn Simpson, Richard Olsen; In Laws Beth Olsen, Phyliss Olsen, Don Melling; son-in-law, Kim Baron; and four great grandchildren, Tyson Webster, 'Aulani Baron, Trever Harris, and Ashlynne Stout.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 20, 2018 at the Thomas 4th Ward LDS Chapel, 1059 W. 100 S. in Blackfoot. The family will meet with friends and relatives Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
