Vonnie Mae Elison Ellis Obituary
Vonnie Mae Elison Ellis returned to her Father in Heaven on April 7, 2017 after fighting a long battle with cancer.
Vonnie was born December 15, 1928 to Horace and Katie Elison in Groveland, Idaho. Vonnie was the middle child of 9 children. Vonnie went to school at Groveland Elementary and then went to Blackfoot High School.
While in High School Vonnie met Merthan Glenn Ellis and started dating before he shipped out with the Navy during World War II. They were married in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple when she was 17, on September 10, 1946, shortly after Merthan returned from the war. On September 10, 2016 they celebrated their 70th anniversary.
Merthan and Vonnie moved to Logan, Utah so that Merthan could go to school. After two quarters of school they returned to the Blackfoot area where they lived and farmed for many years before moving to Hagerman, Idaho and finally to Wendell, Idaho. Vonnie was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many different callings.
Her favorite callings where ones where she could work with the youth. Vonnie and Merthan served as missionaries and temple workers during Vonnie's life. They worked in the temples in Nauvoo, Illinois, Ogden, Utah and Boise, Idaho.
Vonnie loved to sew, bake and garden. She went to seamstress school and she and her sister Shelda owned and operated the Sewfari fabric store for many years in Blackfoot, Idaho. She became a beautiful seamstress and learn to do tailoring. She sewed for many people, including countless wedding dresses and taught her daughters and grand-daughters to sew as well as many others. Vonnie loved to sew and would teach anyone who wanted to learn. Vonnie was an amazing cook. Merthan said that when he was looking for a wife he wanted to marry someone who could cook as well as his mother and he got someone who could cook better than his mother. Vonnie was an amazing baker. She could bake the best bread and all her family looked forward to going to Grandma's house for her homemade bread.
Vonnie will be loved and missed by her large family and many friends. She is survived by her husband Merthan Ellis and their children Randy Ellis (Chris), Kevin Ellis (Sylvia), Kim Ellis (Tammy), Merilee Waters (Harold), Jeff Sears (Dyan), Lanett Hallows (Barry), Garrin Ellis (Stefanie), 41 grandchildren and 83 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Roland and Delos Elison and her sisters Gloria Carter and Katie Staley.
She was proceeded in death by her daughter Margo Sears, her sisters Beth Stringham, Reva Stevenson, Shelda Belnap and her brother George Elison, and her parents and two grand-daughters and one great grandson.
The funeral will be held on April 21 at 11 a.m. at the LDS Church in Wendell at 605 North Idaho St. There will be a viewing prior to the service from 9:30-10:30 a.m. There will also be a viewing Thursday night from 6-8 p.m. at the church.
