Mr Heggen was a true force of nature. I first met him as a sophomore at the College of Design, Iowa State University about 1981- he was my first college drawing professor. In the many classes I had with him, he would constantly walk around the room with his fisherman cap on, coming up from behind and telling us well practiced stories as we attempted to draw our still lifes. He was a master strategist- In the midst of our laughter, he was sneaking in his teachings about the qualities of a mark and a line, how to be sensitive- he'd remind us you don't need to render every last detail- your mind will complete it. And you know, it worked! He inspired so many young people as a teacher and with his wit and wisdom, kept us coming back for more. I will always remember him as his student, and now as I teach at that same college, I can only hope to reflect the excellence he showed to me. Thanks Mr. Heggen for your stories, your teachings and for inspiring me and so many others. I feel incredibly lucky to have known you.
My sympathies go out to his wife and family, and daughter Joyce, my AHS classmate. He will be missed.
