Funeral service for Mrs. Helen Mardell Clay, 89, of Jacksonville, will be held on Friday, January 8, 2021 at 1:30 pm at Post Oak Baptist Church. Brother Larry Bollinger will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until time of the service at the church.Mrs. Clay received her angel wings on January 3, 2021 at her home with her loving family by her side. She is preceded in death by her father, Harry Peters, Sr.; mother, Freda Walls; her brother, Harry Peters, Jr.; and two sisters, Treva Mertz and Jackie Luchtefeld; aunt, Lorean Macklin.Left to cherish her memories are her husband of 53 years, Colvin Sonny Clay; her children, Cindy Cheesman (Don) of Tilton, Illinois and Keith Koppen of Tilton, Illinois; stepsons, Buddy Clay (Gigi) of Candler, North Carolina and Marty Clay (Jamie) of Casa Grande, Arizona; granddaughters, Christina Ray of Tilton, Illinois, Tara Westbrook of Greenville, South Carolina; grandsons, Donnie Cheesman of Fithian, Illinois and Cole Carter of Florida; 6 great grandchildren; brothers, Richard Peters (Mildred) of Ceder Creek, Texas and Ron Walls of Effingham, Illinois; sisters, Pat Thoele of Largo, Florida, Dixie George, of DuQuoin, Illinois, Marlene Burrnside (Ray) of Morris, Illinois, Vickie Walker (Bob) of Effingham, Illinois.
She was born on February 1, 1931 in Effingham, Illinois and has resided in Jacksonville for the past 36 years. Mardell was a wonderful wife, mom, grandma, and great grandma and sister. She brought joy to all that knew her, she was a special lady with unique and caring qualities. She was a caregiver to many family and friends she loved to the fullest. She was an avid Nascar fan, she loved riding on the Harley with her husband and watching football on TV. She was the past President of the East Alabama Ladies Club. She was married for 53 years to the love of her life.
