J. O'Neill Duffy
AGE: 87 • Rumson
J. O'Neill Duffy, 87, a 51 year resident of Rumson, peacefully died at home on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012. He was born and raised in Hoboken. He was a graduate of Xavier High School in New York and Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA. At the age of 19, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy serving in WWII in the Pacific aboard the USS Bogue. O'Neill married Claire Brogan in 1948. He was the co-founder and president of Duffy Inc. Space Planners and Designers in NY. He served many years as a councilman for the Borough of Rumson. O'Neill was an avid golfer, a longtime member of the Fat Man's Club, a lifetime member of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in the City of New York, a member of Rumson Country Club, Sea Bright Beach Club and a communicant of Holy Cross R.C. Church.
O'Neill was predeceased by his parents, William and Rose Duffy; his brother, Robert; sisters, Marion Sieminski, Veronica Grimes and Rose Gallagher; grandson, Kevin Patrick Duffy; and in 2007 his beloved wife of 59 years, Claire Brogan Duffy. He is survived by his sons, James O'Neill Duffy Jr. and his wife Sacka of Rumson, and T. Brogan Duffy and his partner Des Kelly of San Diego, CA; his brother, William J. Duffy Jr. and his wife Jean of Interlaken; grandchildren, Maureen Duffy Mayer and husband Will of Athens, GA, James O'Neill Duffy III and wife Lynn of Melville, NY, Kathleen Duffy Kleeblatt and husband Michael of McLean, VA, Brendan Duffy and wife Lauren of Red Bank, Thomas Duffy and wife Aubrey and Patrick Duffy, all of San Francisco, CA; and "The Greats" as O'Neill referred to them, Riley, Rory, Reeghan and Reese Mayer, James O'Neill Duffy IV, William T. Duffy, Fordham and Hunter Kleeblatt, Declan and Grace Duffy and Tai and Miriam Duffy.
A memorial gathering will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20 at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. A memorial mass will be offered 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21 at Holy Cross R.C. Church, Rumson. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mr. Duffy's memory to the VNA Health Group, 176 Riverside Ave., Red Bank, NJ 07701. Please visit J.
