Herbert Blom

Herbert Blom (1923-2013), 89, of Sarasota, Fla./Gadsden, Ala., died Sunday, March 3, 2013. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and raised in Sweden and New Jersey. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy, with convoys to South America, Europe, the Middle East, Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean. Following WWII, he graduated from Upsala College in East Orange New Jersey in 1948. He entered the F.B.I. in 1951 and served in Knoxville, TN, Minneapolis, MN, Fargo, ND, and Newark, NJ, retiring in 1976 as Assistant Senior Resident Agent in Red Bank, NJ. Upon his retirement from the F.B.I., he settled in Sarasota, FL, where he became Assistant Chapter Manager for the American Red Cross of Sarasota County. Following his retirement from the Red Cross, he was an active volunteer for Sarasota Memorial Hospital, the YMCA Aquatic Program where he enjoyed teaching swimming to physically challenged persons, Community Haven and he was also a coach for the Sarasota County Special Olympics. Herb was a member of the Church of the Palms and the Gulf Coast Chapter of Former Special Agents of the F.B.I.

He was a loving father, predeceased by his daughter, Linda and son, William. He is survived by his beloved wife, Doris and sons, Robert (wife, Jan) and Thomas (wife, Sheila), four grandsons, one granddaughter and one great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 15 at the Church of the Palms, Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Haven and Adult Center, 4405 DeSoto Road, Sarasota, FL 34235.
