AGE: 78 • Point Pleasant

Robert "Ropey" Thrunk, 78, joined his parents, Frances and Peter, and his sister, Frances Harrington, on March 14, 2014 after an eight month battle with cancer. His wife, Carol Ernst Thrunk, of 53 years, their three daughters: Teri Mancino and husband Sam, Maureen Belzer and husband Barry, Barbara LoSordo and husband John; and their two sons: Bob and wife Kim, Michael and Shelley, will carry on his legacy, living with the same pride, strength, and work ethic that he instilled in them. He has twelve cherished grandchildren: Lauren, Joe and Jenn; Nicholas, Juliana, and Isabella; Lauren, Ryan, Taylor, Alexis, Teagan and Rylee; and great-granddaughter, Gia. His siblings, Peter Thrunk

and wife Camille, Carol Isley, Marilyn Higgins, and Gloria Barry are also mourning his loss, along with his loyal friends.

Ropey was born in Jersey City on the 4th of July, attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and Saint Al's High School, Jersey City, where he was an outstanding basketball player, holding the scoring record for

many years. He continued his education at Canisius College, Buffalo, NY; on a basketball scholarship.

He served in the US Army, in the Jersey City Police Department, and then as a Jersey City Fire Fighter for 26 years. Ropey also worked part-time as a house painter for over 50 years, including after he retired in Point Pleasant. He lived his life with a simple philosophy

- work hard at something you enjoy, and love and support your family. He was probably best known as a sports enthusiast.
