Shirley Elizabeth McLean

AGE: 96 • formerly of Manahawkin

Shirley Elizabeth McLean, 96, formerly of Manahawkin, NJ, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at Grady Hospital in Delaware, OH after a brief illness. She was born May 21, 1917 in Brooklyn, NY to David and Grace (Taylor) McLean.

Always a lover of poetry and books, Shirley was the first in her family to go to college. Attending night school for eight years, she earned a B.A. from Brooklyn College and a M.A. with distinction from New York University. For over two decades, she worked as a legal secretary for Milton C. Rose, a partner in the Wall Street firm Mudge Rose Guthrie Alexander. Working in the city allowed Shirley to indulge her passion for the arts. She went to concerts at Lincoln Center, attended Broadway plays, watched the American Ballet Company at the Met, and made frequent visits to her favorite art museums. Shirley retired in 1979 to travel and spend more time at the Seashell, her beloved New Jersey shore home. In 1991, she moved there full-time and joined the congregation at the Manahawkin United Methodist Church. Always an independent woman, Shirley lived at the Seashell until it was severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. She then relocated to Delaware, OH to live closer to family.

Left to cherish her memory are nieces, Joan McLean (Cynthia Johnson), Patricia Jenik, Linda (George) Lint and nephews, John McLean, David McLean, Scott (Erika) McLean; the Eismann family (Jennifer, Nathaniel, Katherine and Audrey); and a host of long-time friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Mabel; brothers, Clifford and David (Betty); nieces, Claudene McLean and Carol Jenik; and devoted friends, Gladys and Dortha Gillen and Betty and Bob Messler.

A Celebration of Life service will be held in May at the Manahawkin United Methodist. Date and time pending. Memorial donations may be made to Meals on Wheels of Ocean County, 225 Fourth St., Lakewood, NJ 08701 or St. Francis Community Center, 4700 Long Beach Blvd., Brant Beach, NJ 08008.
