Adelaide Sooy Weidknecht

Gloucester City - Adelaide Sooy Weidknecht, 82, departed this life to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on February 8, 2018. She was born on January 3, 1936 in Gloucester City, NJ. Adelaide founded the Immanuel Lutheran Nursery School in Lakewood, NJ, where she was also the first director. She earned Masters Degrees in Elementary Education and Urban Studies, teaching elementary school in Stratford, NJ and library/media in Manahawkin, NJ. With her writers group, Eight Women Writers, she co-authored the three novels of the Sandcastle Mysteries series. Adelaide was also an award-winning poet. An enthusiast of history, she was a member of the Great John Mathis Chapter of the DAR and the Rancocas Chapter of the Colonial Dames. A woman of committed faith, Adelaide was a member of Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit in Manahawkin, NJ.

Adelaide was predeceased by her loving husband of 41 years, the Reverend Paul Weidknecht, Jr. She is survived by sons Paul Weidknecht III, Erik Andrew Weidknecht and wife, Katrina, and her daughter Jill W. Van Horne and husband, Van. Adelaide is survived by five grandchildren, whom she loved with her entire being; Evan, Wade, Max, Eve, and Zachariah.

Beyond her accomplishments, Adelaide was a beautiful soul with a perpetual smile. If she ever had a bad day, no one ever knew it. On February 4th, with a double knee replacement and a chronic autoimmune disorder, this lifelong Birds fan had a great day, double high-fiving when Tom Brady's pass failed and the Philadelphia Eagles had secured their first Super Bowl victory.

The family will receive friends at 11AM for calling hours and 12 noon for the service on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Grace Lutheran Church; 300 Roseberry Street; Phillipsburg, NJ 08865. Interment will be in Fairmount Cemetery; Phillipsburg, NJ.
