Alfred "Sonny" Carrea Jr. Obituary
Alfred "Sonny" Carrea, Jr

Toms River - Alfred "Sonny" Carrea, Jr., 81 of Toms River, formerly of Colonia and Newark, NJ, went home to be with the Lord and the love of his life, Beverly, on December 28, 2017. Born to the late Alfred and Sofia Carrea in 1936, he was raised in Newark where he cultivated his love of music at Arts High School, playing accordion for local weddings and community events. Al later owned an Esso Gas Station in Newark, before working for New Jersey Transit for over 30 years, where he put his mechanical and artistic skills to use painting commuter buses. An animal lover, Al took care of every cat, dog, bird and squirrel he encountered. He was a loving and gentle soul who devoted his life to family, friends, and his many pets. Al, known to his grandchildren as "Poppy", enjoyed woodworking, playing darts and shuffleboard with friends, attending his grandson Anthony's basketball games, and watching his grandson Lucas ("Little Alfred") play guitar. After losing his beloved wife Beverly 8 years ago this month, he joined a Monday Bereavement group where he continued meeting every Monday for lunch with his "harem" of beloved friends. Alfred was predeceased by his wife Beverly Carrea, of 51 years, and his much adored cats Fluff, Rusty, and Shadow and part-time buddy Patrick. He is survived by his daughter Cyndi and son Michael, son- and daughter-in-law Glen and Heather, and grandchildren Anthony, Marissa, Lucas, Glen, and Lara. He is also survived by his sister Yolanda Ryan and brother Peter Carrea, and their families. Family and friends are invited for a memorial service on Saturday, December 30 from 2-5pm, at Oceanside Memorial Home, 2014 Main Street, Lake Como, NJ 07719. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alfred Carrea, Jr.'s name may be sent to the Associated Humane Societies and Popcorn Park of NJ, PO Box 43, Forked River, NJ 08731-0043.
