Dr. Alfred J. Casagrande, Jr.

AGE: 90 • Matawan

Dr. Alfred J. Casagrande, Jr. passed away peacefully January 26, 2017 at his residence. He was born to Alfred J. Sr and Alice (Boasi) Casagrande in Toms River on September 12, 1926. He graduated from Toms River High School in 1943, Columbia University, New York Medical College and interned at City Hospital in New York (where he met his future wife Helene Zschorna). Following 2 years of service in the U.S. Army, he joined the practice of Dr. Aram Captanian in Matawan in 1954, where he practiced Family Medicine for 40 years until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of the medical staff and Board of Directors at Bayshore Community Hospital since its inception in 1963, and was recognized by numerous groups for his many years of dedicated service to the residents of Matawan and surrounding communities. He was inducted into the Toms River High School Hall of Fame in 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents and numerous aunts and uncles and cousins. He is survived by Helene, his loving and dedicated wife of 65+ years; his children Bill Casagrande (Gerry) Louisville, KY, Tom Casagrande (Sharon) Lawrenceville, Ga., Bob Casagrande (Jane) Matawan, Paul Casagrande (Lee) Beachwood, Alice Sammon (John) Bradley Beach, David Casagrande, Bradley Beach, Carol Casagrande, Blue Bell, PA, and Joan Sammon (Mark) Blue Bell, PA; grandchildren Michael, Dan (Kelli), Connor, Will, Aaron (Sarah), Craig, Katherine, Kyle, Kevin and Grace: great-grand daughter Claire; brother Richard Casagrande (Marilyn) and sister Cathy Bryne (Frank); and long-time neighbors and friends, Calvin and Pearl Bell and Dr. Zaven Ayanian. At his request, there will be no viewing. A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered, 10:00 AM, Saturday, February 4th. at St. Clements Catholic Church, 172 Freneau Ave, Matawan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the or the Matawan Aberdeen First Aid Squad.
