AGE: 96 • Lakewood

Alfred 'Barney' Zarro, 96, of Lakewood, NJ, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2017. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, on February 15, 1921 to the late Jenny & Ralph Zarro. His siblings, Joe, Eleanor, Mary, Nick, Antoinette, and Sylvia predeceased him. On October 1, 1947, Barney married 'the love of his life', Carmela (Milano), who predeceased him on April 6, 2006. He is survived by his five children, Gina Bucik (Joe), Mary Ann Davis (Paul Matthews), Sylvia King (Ronnie Mantlo), Ralph Zarro, and Ellie Velicky (Jim); his six grandchildren, George King (Lisa), Anthony Zarro (Cason), Robbie King (Erin), April Seibel (Jeff), Kevin King (Nikki), and Ariel Velicky; eleven great-grandchildren, Derek, Keith, Jason, Arkady, Emery, Riley, Bobby, Brennan, Jax, Aquilla, and Caleb; his beloved nieces and nephews; and, his dear friend, Grace Freschi. Barney was proud, and honored to be a veteran, having enlisted in the Army during World War II, serving his country as a medic. For many years, Barney was well known in the Bloomfield Avenue area of Newark, NJ, as the owner/operator of Barney's Pizzeria, and was famous for his 'mozzarella sandwiches'. Upon retiring from the restaurant business, Barney sold real estate in, and around Lakewood, NJ. He had many friends, and had an immeasurable energy and zest for life. Most of all, he loved people, and always wanted to be of service to people near and far. He devoted many years volunteering for the Salvation Army, Kiwanis, and many other organizations. He will long be remembered, and greatly missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017 from 4-8PM at the D'Elia Funeral Home 1300 Vermont Ave. Lakewood, NJ 08701. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, June 2, 2017 at 12PM at the St. Mary of the Lake Church in Lakewood. Interment will take place at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veteran's Cemetery.
