Anthony De Angelis

Neptune - Anthony De Angelis, 81, of Neptune, passed away on Friday, January 12 at Jersey Shore Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Born in Asbury Park, Anthony was an iconic member of the community known to everyone as "Big Red." He graduated from Asbury Park High School where he excelled in athletics and met the love of his life, Lorraine Cooper. He was co-captain of the 1953 Group IV State Championship Blue Bishops football team, which in 2016 was voted the greatest football team in Jersey shore history by the Asbury Park Press. He was also the recipient of the David Fried Memorial trophy for outstanding athleticism in both football and basketball. Anthony attended Fordham University after winning a football scholarship. He later served in the army during the Berlin Wall Crisis. He was employed by the Asbury Park Post Office, where he retired as a superintendent.

Anthony was predeceased by his son, Dr. Joseph Paul; his parents Joseph and Dolly; and his sister Bette Trimble and husband Bill. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lorraine; his son, Jeffrey and daughter-in-law Kerry of Toms River; daughter-in-law Patricia of Ocean Township; four grandchildren: Joseph, Michael, Ashley, and Anthony; sister Phyllis Stelluto and husband Jim; brother Vincent and wife Edna; sister-in-law Deborah Cooper; and many nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to the many physicians, nurses, and caregivers from Jersey Shore Medical Center who took exemplary care of Anthony over the past several years, with special affection and love for his favorite nurse, Courtney.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Francioni, Taylor and Lopez Funeral Home, 1200 Tenth and Atkins Avenues, Neptune. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. for a funeral mass at 10:30 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Asbury Park. Interment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Neptune.
