Antonia Ramos Obituary
Antonia Ramos

AGE: 96 •

Antonia Ramos (neé Ortiz), 96, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2017 at her home. She was born in Arroyo, Puerto Rico.

Mrs. Ramos married her high school sweetheart, Vicente. She was a school teacher in Puerto Rico before she and Vicente moved to New York, where they raised five children. While she did not teach school after moving to New York, she was a life-long teacher through leading by example. She was active in the Roman Catholic Church throughout her life. Fluent in both Spanish and English, she helped many other families who moved from Spanish-speaking countries adjust to life in New York. Although she eventually settled in New Jersey, she considered herself a commensurate "Nuyorican", proud of where she came from and the amazing loving family to which she was the matriarch.

She is survived by her children, Vicente (wife, Catherine) of Melbourne, FL, Lucy Helfeld (husband, Fred) of Hewlett, New York, Carlos Antonio (wife, Debbie) of Tampa, FL, and Raymond Ramos (wife, Haydee) of Monroe, CT. Also surviving are her nine cherished grandchildren and her great-grandchildren, who lovingly referred to her as Abi, as well as countless other family members and friends. She is predeceased by her parents, Jacinto and Ingracia Ortiz, her husband, her daughter Ingrid, son-in-law Edward Doherty, and six siblings.

Visitation will be held at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank, NJ 07701 on Thursday, March 9, 2017 from 4 to 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 10, 2017 at 10 AM at St. Anthony's of Padua in Red Bank. Interment will follow at Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent in Antonia's memory to St. Anthony's Social Concerns Ministry in Red Bank.
