Arthur H. Machen Obituary
Arthur H. Machen

AGE: 91 • Tinton Falls

Arthur H. Machen, 91 of Tinton Falls, NJ passed peacefully at home on Sunday January 22, 2017. He died of complications of a broken heart having been predeceased by Patricia, his wife of 64 years in 2015.

Arthur was born and raised in Queens, NY with his brothers Lewis and Zimri, during the great depression years. They were poor and as a boy he worked for every business in town delivering newspapers, magazines, circulars, prescriptions, dry cleaning and meat from the butcher. He parked cars. Happily he had friends that got him into the Carlton theater on Jamaica Avenue for free. There, as a teen he enjoyed seeing all the big bands play every week.

At the start of WWII, being too young to enlist, Arthur contributed to the war effort by delivering messages on bicycle during blackouts. Turning 18 in February 1943, Arthur was called to active duty. Unable to attend graduation in June, his mother accepted his diploma from Jamaica High School. Arthur served in the Army Anti- Aircraft Artillery as a gunner in the Pacific theater on the island of Morotai. After the war, Arthur attended Hervey Junior College. In June 1947, Arthur was introduced to 17 year-old Patricia as a work internship teammate at the Ministers and Missionaries Benefit Board. It was love at first sight. They married three years later on September 10, 1950, when Arthur's salary was raised to $3,300 per year. They started their marriage in a two room love

nest, and in 1955 they moved to their home in Flushing, NY where they lived for over 35 happy years. It was there that they raised their daughters and enjoyed the fellowship they found as members of The Church on the Hill. There Arthur served as treasurer of both the church and Sunday school. Arthur was a Free and Accepted Mason since 1958. The Flushing years were marked by great friends, couples club, group vacations, lodge dances, tennis and many, many parties.

After 43 years Arthur retired from his position as comptroller at the Ministers and Missionaries Benefit Board. He was honored not only for his outstanding skills but for endearing himself to all with good humor. In 1992 Pat and Art moved to North Carolina to enjoy their golden years in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains where they welcomed family and friends with heartfelt hospitality. There Arthur enjoyed participating in the senior olympic games as an ace bowler and ping pong player. In 2004 they relocated to Tinton Falls, NJ to be closer to their daughters and growing families.

Arthur valued hard work, honesty, responsibility and a good laugh. In his later years he further valued the stock market, a good steak (rare), a salad with blue cheese and a Manhattan.

Arthur is survived by his daughters and sons-in-laws, Nancy and Ron Smith and Audrey and Rick Case. Five grandchildren Brian (Alicia), Kevin (Rachael), and Jenni Smith, Evan and Eliza Case. Two great grandchildren, Nolan and Perri Patricia Smith. And his faithful feline companion Baxter. We treasure your wisdom, generosity and guidance always. Like your favorite song, you are the wind beneath our wings. At Arthur's request there will be no wake or funeral. A memorial will be planned for a future date to celebrate Arthur's life. His ashes will be interred beside Patricia's in the rose garden at The Church on the Hill in Flushing, NY.
