Barbara Ann Booker Simmons Smith

Asbury Park - Barbara Ann Booker Simmons Smith was born in Neptune, NJ on September 24, 1939. She was the daughter of the late Marietta and Frank D. Booker. She fell asleep on January 27, 2018. Barbara attended Holy Spirit School in Asbury Park, NJ. She spent many years working in Food and Nutrition at Jersey University Medical Center, formerly known as Fitkins Hospital, followed by a lifelong commitment to her vocation as a caregiver. She was married to the late Edward Simmons and later married Wilbur Smith, who both predeceased her. Barbara served her community, and was a long time active member of Saint Peter Claver Church. She dedicated years of service as part of the Saint Peter Claver Church community and volunteered her time at the Saint Vincent De Paul thrift shop in addition to many years of assisting with fundraising. Barbara was a warm and generous person, she was a lot of things to a lot of people, but her primary devotion was motherhood....she was a devout nurturer...driven by compassion and selflessness. She made everyone feel welcome. Those that knew her would agree that she enjoyed feeding people, clothing people and taking care of the "the kids"... She was known to her grandchildren as "Grandma", and her grandchildren were her life. She was predeceased by three brothers Thomas H. Booker Frank D. Booker Jr. and William S. Booker, two sons Thomas K. Simmons and Edward "Jack" Simmons Jr. She is survived by two sisters Rose Vernell, Philadelphia, PA and Marietta Coston, Greensboro, NC. And, one brother Timothy Booker, White Plains, MD. She is also survived by her children Phillip Simmons, Rita Simmons, Cecilia Simmons, Carl Simmons, Denise Smith and Pierre Foy. She also have 17 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
