Benjamin Charles Hawkins Obituary
Benjamin Charles Hawkins

AGE: 73 •

He passed away at 11:00pm on 10/09/2017.

Ben Hawkins a.k.a. "The Hawk" was born in Newark, New Jersey to Mary Louisa Banks Hawkins and Benjamin Lawrence Hawkins.

He attended Weequahic High School before moving to Nutley, NJ, where he graduated in 1962 with a full football scholarship to Arizona State. He attended ASU from

1962 - 1966, and after college he was drafted in the third round of the 1966 NFL Draft (36th overall) by the Eagles he was also selected in the fifth round of the 1966 AFL Draft (38th overall) by the New York Jets but opted to play in the NFL instead. Ben played with the Philadelphia Eagles for 8 years and was traded to the Cleveland Browns for one season. Ben led the NFL in receiving yards while with the Eagles in 1967. After his playing career he became a wide receiver coach in the short lived USFL (United States Football League) for the Arizona Outlaws and for the San Antonio Gunslingers. After his stint in Arizona and Texas he returned to his home state of New Jersey, and settled in Belmar.

While he was in Arizona, he met and became partners with Mary Duggan for over 38 years and had two children; Benjamin Michael, and Nichole Tamara.

He forged his own path through life with what seems like no blueprint. He had a number of jobs, joint ventures with friends and colleagues, but most of all he enjoyed his time in Belmar by the sea. He loved his family, his music, his plants, his animals and especially his cats. He was a constant instigator and could be heard throughout the neighborhood calling out "Hey, MF" as a show of affection. All in all he was lovable and never met anyone he didn't like or couldn't make laugh.

He is survived by his mother Mary L. Hawkins (102 years young), Mary Duggan, his two children Benjamin and Nichole Hawkins and his sister Adrienne Hawkins.

Memorial service will be held on Thursday October 12th at Reilly Bonner Funeral Home, 801 D St. Belmar, NJ 07719. The family will be greeting friends and relatives between 3-6pm, with a celebration of life memorial at 6pm. Bring your smile and a good story.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests bringing a donation for the ASPCA in honor Ben's love for animals.
