AGE: 75 • Toms River

Bernadette Standowski, of Toms River passed away November 17th, at Hampton Ridge Healthcare Center. She was 75 years old. She was born in South Amboy to parents Benjamin and Sophie Prusakowski. Bernadette was a resident of Lakewood for 30 years before settling in Toms River, 18 years ago.

Bernadette held many positions during her professional career starting in 1976 when she was appointed Administrative Secretary for the Lakewood Township Municipal Utilities Authority. From 1977 to 1989 Bernadette worked for Lakewood Township Municipal Utilities Authority, there she served on several committees such as the Lakewood Township 100TH Anniversary committee, a Judge for Little Miss Lakewood (Sponsored by the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce),Co-Chairperson of the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce Fair Days, a committee member for the Jersey Shore Council of Boy Scouts of America Outstanding Community Service Award, and also a committee member for the Georgian Court College Library Guild Fashion Show .

In September of 1989 Bernadette was Appointed Municipal Clerk of the Township of Lakewood where she worked for over 20 years. Bernadette served on various committees as appointed by the Governing Body and Office automation task force such as the revenue enhancement committee, the ordinance review and recommendation committee, and as the secretary to the Board of Health. Bernadette was the Recipient of the Women's History Month Award in March of 1993, the Recipient of Lakewood Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Month November 1995, and the Recipient of the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) award in 1997.

In her free time Bernadette often participated in the Mentoring Program with Lakewood Public Schools. She was a past member of the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and served as President. She also was a member of the Ocean County Clerks Association; she served on the Executive Board, and was President for 2 years. Bernadette was elected as member of the Executive Board of the Municipal Clerks Association of New Jersey in 1998 and went on to become President in 2002. She served on different committees during membership of the Municipal Clerks Association of New Jersey.

In 2003 Bernadette was appointed Co-adjutant Faculty Member for the Center for Government Services at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. She worked there for almost 10 years. In September of 2013 Bernadette became an active member St. Andrew United Methodist Church.

Bernadette was a wonderful mother and friend. She was also an excellent knitter. She traveled the world with her knitting groups, collecting yarn and patterns from all of the locations she visited. Over the years she has knitted hundreds of items, including blankets, sweaters, scarfs, and shawls which her family and friends treasure.

Bernadette is predeceased by her Father Benjamin, Mother Sophie and Brother Thomas Prusakowski.

She is survived by her Sister; Doris Seckinger, Children; John Standowski, Judy Woodward, Grandchildren; Bryan, Brittany, and Shawn Woodward. Niece and Nephew; Adrienne Melnyk, Andrew Aul and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be Monday from 6 to 9 PM, and Tuesday 9 to 11 AM at D'Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Avenue, Lakewood NJ. A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday 11 AM at, the funeral home.
